Fresno resident Ethan Chatagnier is a graduate of Fresno State, where he won the Larry Levis Prize in Poetry, and of Emerson College (MA in Publishing and Writing). His

short stories have won several prizes, and in 2022 the California Independent Booksellers Alliance honored his novel Singer Distance with the Golden Poppy Award. Three successful local writers recommended his work at the May 4, 2024 San Joaquin Valley Book Fest.

It’s a story that brings together Mars, math proofs, and grad students in the 1960s. It is beautifully written, exploring the meaning of distance in human relationships with an intriguing premise. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. You can order it from Petunia’s Books or bookstore.org.

Ethan is writing his next novel, a mystery set in the 1850s, about a composer trying to finish his great work, but haunted by visions that he does not understand.

“A road can be the connection between places or the distance between them, and as deeply as I longed to reach our destination, I also longed to drive this one forever.”
